So, I am the last person to give advise about what we eat or take into our bodies, but my Mother-in-law sent an article from the Des News that I thought was great. It talks about how we think something has nutritious value just because of it's color and such. It's a short read so I'll post it.
"We Americans are eating ourselves to death. It is like a staged suicide with a sugared drink. Everyone knows we are eating too much of everything; we are also eating too much of the wrong things and too little of the right things.
The food industrial complex to grow profits has created stuff they call food. Like the cartoon says, "It is not exactly anti-food because it contains foodlike properties."
The idea is that if there is any nutrient isolated in some food, that molecule is injected into something as a carrier and becomes a sellable so-called food. It happens all the time. Oranges have vitamin C. Ergo ignoring all the other stuff that makes up a real orange fruit, vitamin C is added to sugar from corn syrup, then preservatives for killing anything living, dye number 200 to make it look orange, a dash of some mineral mined in Nevada and who knows what else — because it cannot be pronounced — is stirred in. A cute, smiling animal character is wrapped around it, and magically the children of America have a patched-together Frankenstein food. The only thing missing is a zap of lightning.
Our nutritional demise is not only what we eat — it could also be what we are not eating. The Western diet is famous for the processed foods that remove anything that is fibrous. I stand accused. I can't stand pulp in my orange juice — Waa. But if one were to have three identical apples and eat one as a whole fruit, the other as apple sauce and the third as apple juice the blood sugar would get higher and higher as the fiber gets lower and lower. Maybe it is time that we eat the box and throw away the cereal."
